December 28-January 3, 2026

As we enter a season of Advent, it is always a time of anticipation and expectation. We look forward to sweet moments with family and friends. We hope for closeness and deeper connection with those around us. We desire celebrations that are memorable and meaningful.

Sometimes though, things are not at all what we expect.

During this time of year, we sing Christmas carols to remind ourselves that our hearts belong to Christ. He is the center of all that we hope for in this life and for eternity. Here, we can only long for His return. We can look to Him to mend our hardships and losses. But, we won’t see everything repaired and renewed until His return. Alas, we wait for His second coming.

The song O Come Emmanuel gives us meaningful ideas to reflect on in its lyrics. This song is written to be sung in a minor key traditionally reflecting a song of lament. Over the next few weeks, we will look more closely at those words and what they point us to. We will anchor our reflections in Scriptures that connect and flow with the lyrics. During the next few weeks, we will practice the voice of lament for those things we are waiting on and anticipating.

This week's focus: O come, our great High Priest, and intercede/Thy sacrifice, our only plea/The judgment we no longer fear/Thy precious blood has brought us near/Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel/Has banished every fear of hell

Day 1: What does it mean the Jesus is our High Priest? Read Hebrews 4:14-16, 2:17, and chapter 7. Why do you think Jesus fills the role of priest for us?

Day 2: Jesus intercedes for you as He sits at the right hand of the Father. What do you need Him to pray that you haven’t had words for this week? Read Romans 8:34

Day 3: What has Jesus sacrifice meant to you? Take some time and reflect on the gift of eternal life that came as a result of His death on the cross. As we move into celebration of His birth, we remember the whole reason He came was to die. Read Isaiah 53:1-12.

Day 4: When we take communion, we say, “The blood of Christ shed for the forgiveness of your sins.” Say that statement out loud three times, changing the word “your” to “my.” The blood of Christ washed your sin clean and carried you into eternity. Remember that today and document it.

Day 5: Rejoice! What can you rejoice about today? Tell someone about what you are rejoicing about.
