The theme of home surfaces throughout the Bible. Sometimes Scripture reassures us that when we build our homes on Christ, we can flourish. Other times, it reminds us that this world is not our ultimate home, to not cling too tightly to this life. The feeling of home comes from a sense of safety, comfort, and belonging, all of which come from God Himself.
As we explore this theme throughout the month, we would usually focus on one passage. But because home is such a rich and layered theme in Scripture, we will look at many passages to discover what God has to say about home.
This week's focus: Home Is a Place to Serve Others
This week's Bible reading: Hebrews 13:14
Day 1: Joshua 24:15
What are some ways your home serves others? How does your home reflect your desire to serve the Lord?
Day 2: 1 Peter 4:9
How prevalent are grumbling and complaining in your home? What might it look like to practice hospitality without grumbling?
Day 3: Hebrews 13:2
Who are the “strangers” you have invited into your home? Do they look and live like you? Are you also making room for people from different ages, stages of life, backgrounds, and cultures?
Day 4: Romans 12:13
What does it mean to “practice hospitality”? What might practicing hospitality look like in your home, beyond simply inviting someone over for a meal?
Day 5: 3 John 1:8
Have you invited someone who serves the Lord full time into your home for a time of rest and respite? If not, what could that look like?
Challenge: Invite someone into your home this week, even if that means sitting together on your porch or sharing a picnic in your yard. It could be a meal, an overnight stay, a cup of coffee, or even a time of prayer. If you regularly host people, stretch yourself to invite someone outside your typical circle or someone you might not normally think to host. Ask God to show you who might need the welcome of your home.
